Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

manifold got alot of work of work to do if there gonna bounce back from there dismissal from gca 1's, dropped at least 8 easy chances today, very sloppy. on the other hand marshall were cruising at 1-75 and 2-110 so probably should've made more than 200. But at the end of the day avoiding an outright result that looked inevitable at 2 this arvo is a fair effort and shows a bit of a fighting spirit that may have been lacking at the bears for the last couple of seasons.

NORTH GEELONG vs LARA

We arrive at Osborne Park on a reasonable day, unaware of who will be playing, informed Danny Hughes will show up eventually, North Lose the toss(AGAIN) and Lara elect to have a bat. Marvellous start by North, with Brad Scown dismissing Andy Hughes in the first over. Celebrations were short lived, as Bambury walked to the crease, the key wicket. Millard dropped him in the slips on about 2, and Cooper started to chance his arm from the other end. Luckily for the Wags, Bambury smashed one into his pad off Armistead and was caught behind for 14. The next two wickets fell in quick succession, and soon Cooper started dominating the attack, but was dropped another two times by Dragicevic and Szponar. Jason Hughes came to the crease and provided serviceable support through to the break. Soon after the break, Cooper lost his head and skied one to Lymer off Millard. The fielding picked up with an air of confidence about and Millard picked up another wicket. Parsons and Hughes attempted to resurrect the innings before Hughes was unluckily run out after a misfield(set play). Danny Hughes came to the crease after just arriving and looked to dominate the attack. Armistead was brought back on to clean up the tail and took two wickets in two overs. Lara decided to declare with 5 overs to go, in order to have an over at the North openers before Stumps on day 1. Nothing doing though, as no wickets and no runs were scored.
Lara 9-203 J.Cooper 69 J.Hughes 30 D.Hughes 36* T.Parsons 27 C.Millard 3-27 A.Armistead 3-38

A gloomy looking day for the second week, and once again a wicket fell in the first over with Sam Hall bowled by Jason Hughes. Millard came out and tried to settle things with Al Spierings in his debut 1st Eleven game. Al eventually holed out to Danny Hughes. Armistead and Millard batted until the break, just scratching around, trying not to lose unnecessary wickets. After the break Armistead got a good one off Jason Hughes and was quickly followed by Dragicevic. Lymer headed out to the crease and with Millard still there, it looked as though they would see the Wags home. However, Millards luck run out and he lobbed one to Andy Hughes off Bambury for 81. Frisch followed him, and the Scown came to the wicket on a hat trick of ducks. After looking good, Scown was caught on the boundary going for the big one leaving 20 odd runs to win, with 3 wickets in hand. Jacimovic smashed a couple but was then bowled and then Lymer missed a full toss and was bowled also, leaving Kingwell and Szponar as Norths last chance. Szponar smacked a couple off Bambury but eventually succumbed to Hughes' pace and edged one to the keeper leaving Lara 7 runs ahead.
North Geelong 196 Millard 81 Lymer 37 Armistead 24 Bambury 4-50 J.Hughes 3-67 D.Hughes 3-58

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

Thomson Vs St Peter's Day 2

After posting an imposing 223 Thomson looked for early wickets to restrict a capable St Peter's line up.

Thomson's seamers Dean Riches (0-44), Phil Featherston (0-10) & Ben Smiljanic (0-33) failed to remove Matt Baker (48) or Gavin Nelson (79) as they combined for a well made opening stand of 114. Gavin Nelson particularly playing some nice drives on a low Thomson wicket. The re-introduction of Veteran Adrian Saltalamacchia (4-32) who removed Baker when he padded up to the wrong ball saw a mini-collapse from the visiting team. Smart captaincy from Salts was implemented and the introduction of Sean O'Neill (5-38) paid immediate dividends with the key wickets of Clay Nelson (0) leaving a turning legspinner and Steve Illingworth (6) leg before, misjudging a flighted leg break. St Peter's were still in control at 3-140 at tea. Aaron McArthur (12) and G.Nelson still at the crease.

Upon the resumption of play O'Neill struck again, this time with the help of co-coach Salts who took a sharp chance at 1st slip to remove McArthur and turned the momentum of the innings back to the Tigers.

With G Nelson and Tim Hester (7) at the crease Thomson knew a couple wickets would break the game right open. Against the trend of the innings Nelson offered a chance off Patrick O'Neill (0-14) but the ball went to ground.

Adrian Salts leading from the front then struck the double blow of both Nelson, out bowled cutting a ball too close to him for a beautifully compiled 78 and then Hester, who went back and was unluckily bowled from a Salta-grubber.

St Peter's all of a sudden found themselves in the un-thinkable position of 6-166 after previously cruising at 0-114. Steve Douglas (6) was then caught in a replayed version of the McArthur wicket by Salts off O'Neill which bought keeper James Whitehand (0) to the crease. Within a few balls he was burnt by the stiking batsmen in Jaryd Debeer (10*), the pressure of the match getting to the youngsters head. Graheme Clarke made his way to the crease and Thomson immediately put a man at cow-corner and to the annoyance of the St Peter's skipper he wholed out to a nice catch from Dean Riches off the bowling of S O'Neill. Number 11 bunny Scott Holbrook faced 2 balls before being Salta's 4th wicket for the day, Thomson cleaning up the 10 wickets for 181 inside 68 overs. Debeer the not out batsmen on 10.

After being 0-114 and in complete control St Peter's would be dissapointed with being bundled out for 181. Thomson showed alot of character and will be happy taking out the 6 points. A big clash awaits next week for the Tigers who take on the competition front-runners Murgheboluc whilst St Peter's will look to bounce back against Torquay.

A very good game there, but as soon as St.Peters loose the Nelson's their gone. Don't get too carried away Rissoles I think you'll find St.Peters won't win too many more matches and your bowling needs to improve if their making 150+.

As for our game (if anyone's interested) it's one of the best and hardest fought games I've played in (and enjoyable, whether we won or not) Not having to put up with foul mouthed disrepectful opposition was a comfort and an enjoyable experience, yet knowing the opposition was still playing hard to get the win and respecting their opponents. I wish all games were played in this manner, but I guess we all to play St.peters at least once a year so this isn't gonna happen.

Bell Park started the 2nd day at 4-40 odd, 60 runs ahead after an excellent display of swing and seam bowling from both teams on Day 1. Bell Park was able to bat thru the first hour of the day without loss and build a competitive total until the loss of multiple wickets fell. A steady flow of runs continued with the loss of wickets and Bell park were bowled out for 163, a lead of 180 at tea on day 2.

Waurn ponds were aggrisive with their run chase but also cautious in choosing the right balls to attack. Runs flowed quite freely at the beginning of the innings, but certain wickets stemmed the flow at swung the momentum Bell Park's way. Waurn Ponds needed 90 off the last 20 overs of the day with 5 wickets in hand, with the all important wicket of S.Skene still at the crease. S.skene batted sensibly and nearly got his team thru to a memorable victory until he was bowled for 50 odd, then Bell Park were to tighten the screws and take valuable wickets, but still there was more to come from Waurn ponds. R. Rogers, a young left hand batsman nearly turned hero for Waurn Ponds, ran out in the last over going for a second run from an excelent throw from the outfield, only to be found short, and an agonising 8 runs short for Waurn Ponds.
Once again an extremely tight and well fought tussle, that was enjoyable to play in win, lose or draw.

Hester and Illingworth are more than capable of getting away from teams on good wickets. Bell Park obviously played them on a dodgy wicket at Walker Oval so your view of them as a batting unit is somewhat tainted.

As for our bowling at Thomson this season:

Marshall made 151 & 9/125.
Corio made 237.
St Peter's made 181.

Thomson is the best wicket in Division 2 by a long way and probably has the smallest boundaries. Anything below 200 is a great effort by the bowlers. Anyone who has played their recently would attest to that. If you've got wickets in hand it's happy days after tea.

When a bloke like Gavin Nelson is set he is hard to get out.

I'm not saying the seamers have bowled great, i'm just putting things into perspective. If our bowlers aren't all firing and we're still winning games then it's only a good thing going forward.

St Peter's will definitely make the finals, no doubts about it.

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

WALLINGTON V BARRABOOL

wallington batted first week and started ok before losing b.atkinson for 20 at 1/33, another few quick wickets had us at 3/36 before boofa and dane wise graham steadied the ship to 4/59. another collapse had wallington at 6/66 at the tea break off about 42 overs due to excellent tight bowling. camo asked for a big effort after tea to give the bowlers something to work with and he got it from the two young connoley brothers, they put on 50 before james connoley departed for 26, 7/116 and willigen joined dan connoley and they put on another 42 before willigen holed out in the deep in the 74th for 25, 8/158, finished on 8/171 with dan connoley achieving his best score yet of 42 not out. great bowling by barrabool, stars were mickelson 3/17 off 17, pickering 3/46 off 18.

week two and both sides confident of a win, hutchinson gone for a duck early 1/6, steadied by A.ryan and Pickering before ryan departed caught behind to one of the greatest high left diving superman in front of second slip cathes by benny atkinson you are ever likely to see, check it out on you tube its awesome. 2/32 then 3, then 4/50 thanks to a boofa biemans freak show run out from a straight drive into his foot that ricohet into stumps to leave poor old farnsworth out of his crease ,5,6,7,8 for 52 with young second gamer jarryd atkinson tearing the middle order apart in five overs. fisher from barrabool did his best to keep the inevitable demise by chewing up overs but ran out of partners with the buuls all out for 83 in the 56th over. all bowlers from wallington did well with shipsides 3/30 off 19 and jarryd atkinson 3/5 off 8 being the highlights.

take heaps of aerogard when ya play up there boys.

It was actually a very good wicket on the second day against St.Peters, they're just no good after the Nelson's and Illingworth.
I think you'll find A.T. is the best wicket/square in Div.2, or even Waurn Ponds new cooch wicket was excellent.
Don't no if they'll make finals will be touch and go.

Those figures you quoted on your bowling at home don't overly convince me either. I'm not saying their bad but you Thomson blokes get very excited easily. Better results against higher ranked teams will convince me, but I don't think you have achieved them yet.

The Jarvis square is great but unfortunately the outfield is no good. Manifold's ground is in excellent shape and their wicket is OK. It's a bit slow but good batsmen should be able to think their way through it. Shame I'm not a good batsman. I think the Thommy boys are getting a bit excited. Manifold are still the team to beat

Re: GCA & BPCA match previews and reviews

St Peters will make finals but would not think they will finish top four. Torquay this week. Have played all sides in Top 6 except Murgheboluc and North Shore. Have narrowly missed two outrights; Bell Park by one wicket and Corio by 15 runs. Have had to re-group after losing 6 players from their best side last season which made semis. If they make finals, which they should from here; it would be a good achievement. Obviously losing 6 from the 1sts, means that all other grades need to cope as well. All other sides are in top 6 except 2nds which is a sign of some good depth. Nelsons and Illingworth are certainly their best players; just like other sides have their top two or three. However, take another three out of the best players in the side and obviously a challenge results. Long story short; they make the finals, they will have done well.

I put the figures up to show you how good the wicket is at Thomson, it's hard to bowl teams out at Godfrey St.

Everyone knows Manifold are the team to beat, they were mid-table in Division 1 so if they're weren't winning in Division 2 i would assume they'd be disappointed.

At the same time we're confident we can push them all the way and if we weren't thinking like that well then my team might as well not bother to turn up on Saturday's.

Don't get our confidence mixed up with arrogance, we respect every team we play but we're playing hard to win games of cricket.

Well put Riss. Surely the biggest disappointment this season in Div 2 are the boys from Torquay. I mean, everyone knew they were struggling in Div 1 but then to come down a level and really struggle in all grades makes you wonder what has happened down the Surfcoast Hwy. Maybe anyone on here associated with the club could give a bit of an insight. Probably five or more years since they won that Div 2 flag and went up to Div 1 but could it be that the demands and rigors of Div 1 have hurt them. Many clubs around that would go down the same path if exposed to Div 1 for a length of time. My club for one and I would certainly empathise with Highton this year for not going up. At the end of the day, a club wants to be the best it can be but sometimes, like it or not, that is a good, solid Divvy 2 club. Thoughts?

I heard they were very close to applying to move into the BPCA at the start of the season, I don't know how true it is and if they're still looking to in the coming seasons. It would leave a huge gap on the surf coast if they did leaving no turf club down and around that way.
