Sheffield Shield Thread 2009/2010

Re: Sheffield Shield Thread 2009/2010

Moving on from the argument why Victoria has better players all round although it is blaringly obvious why.

Any chance they may look at singing some interstate players to prevent this from occurring?

That's a good question. The Queensland management has had some challenges lately with some changes there too, but has done very well with how they have handled almost all of them. The only one that was very poorly managed by them was the Nofke issue.

Maher, Bichel, Kasprowicz and Love all retired as did Hayden if you could still call him a Queensland player. Those are very hefty names, all played on the international stage and you could argue some should have played more. They all hold records and are four of the finest players Queensland has ever had. They retired within a season on one another and left a glaring gap there.

Then the Symonds debacle caused him to not want a contract, Johnson moved to Perth to be with his girlfriend, Nofke was lost in a stupid contractual thing and Watson decided that NSW was closer to his heart (and strangely enough almost simultaneously he was playing for Australia in the Ashes :p).

Harris has been injured the whole season, then Hopes was injured playing for Australia and out for most of the season, or both were on international duties.

To add to this Perren has now retired.

After all this there was barely any time left before start of season and they found themselves stuck in a hole. Even advertisements went out in the local papers for Queensland players.

They signed on some past fringe players and had to go with some kids straight out of the academy whether they were ready or not. Due to some very good selection policies they were able to get to the final.

Now there is little space in the team for any other players. If they sign on an interstate player they would obviously want him to play in the First XI. Who gets dropped when the whole team has been performing?

I think the answer to the question is not really. Queensland doesn't have the biggest pulling power when it comes to player trades, also doesn't like having out of state players playing for them, prefers to keep Queensland players as Queenslanders. They have been doing this already, you will notice of the contracted players all have gotten a fair share these last two seasons and now contracts are going out to some more youngsters and some older work horses.

I think is maybe they got in at the start of this season then they may have been able to, but the time frame and some performances of youngsters forced them not to be able to.

I think it's more a matter of crossing fingers and going with what is there, bringing in new players as much as possible to get them into the fray. Perren has to be replaced and there are a couple of big scorers around the State now, Jason Flores looks good. extremely promising though. Hartley is player of the series, Cutting has the most wickets, Feldman has 30 odd wickets in 6 games, McDermott is one for the future, Laughlin and Rimmington continue some good streaks, Broad and Carseldine are bringing in the runs and there are some very promising spinners with Boyce and Dunk. The team has everything in less than a season, and for this I counter eddie's argument that Queensland's management has problems.
