West Indies in Australia

The start of the Australian summer is not far away with West Indies' tour of Australia to get underway in less than three weeks. There was increasing speculation that West Indies would again send a weakened side lead by Floyd Reifer but that has been dispelled with the WICB re-appointing Chris Gayle as captain for the Australian tour. That sent a wave of relief through the Australian camp who were happy with a full-strength line-up being sent across. The West Indies squad contains many regulars but also some players from the second-string side who played the home series against Bangladesh as well as the Champions Trophy. Those three include Adrian Barath, Gavin Tonge and Kemar Roach, the latter two playing in the first test against Bangladesh earlier this year.

The tour consists of a warm-up match against Queensland followed by a three test series with games in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. The One-Day and Twenty20 matches will follow in the new year, beginning in early February.

Hopefully the announcement of the strong squad will lead to some close, hard-fought cricket and with Australia suffering numnerous injuries on the tour of India at the present time, we may see a very competitive test series as well as a strong tour performance by the visitors.

Re: West Indies in Australia

Will be a hard fought series, especially the ODI's. WIndies are unpredictable. We could easily win the test series or it could be very close throughout. We have a few question marks over spots in the line-up, refering to opening position (Watson, Hughes, Rogers, Jaques?), number four (Hussey, Watson, Clarke, Hodge?) and fourth bowler (Hauritz, Clark, Lee, Bollinger?).

Hodge won't play cricket for Australia ever again unless Australia's top order suffers a wide spate of injuries as well as those on the fringes. Same would apply for Rogers who would need three out of Watson, Hughes, Jaques and Katich to succumb to injury also before getting a look in.

The selectors have publicly claimed time and time again that an injury to Clarke, Ponting or Hussey would see Hodge playing in the test side, well Clarke is in doubt for the 1st test and if they put in a younger player then Hussey should be very worried indeed for his future

Hodgeys last test was also replacing Clarke

Don't know if I can see it happening to be honest. Hodge is 35 at the end of next month and his public displeasure at not being picked in recent times would not have won him many fans at the selection table.

The one thing that may work in his favour is that there is no real replacement for Ponting or Clarke in the test side. In saying that, Hodge would be more likely to play if Ponting couldn't take his place in the side rather than Clarke. If Clarke couldn't play, Hussey and North could be moved up one spot with someone coming into the side to bat at six.

Re: West Indies in Australia

It probably wont, but they gave him another contract and keep claiming he is the injury replacement for those spots

But a younger player would indicate that Hussey is in trouble so be interesting to see which way they go, the next in line for a spot at no6 could be White anyway :D

Re: West Indies in Australia

Might have to get in touch with the lads in Perth and organise a big day out at the 3rd Test :)

Re: West Indies in Australia

The tour game is underway, with Queensland hosting the West Indies at Allan Border Field. Chris Gayle has flown home to be with his ill mother and is in serious doubt for the first test, Denesh Ramdin has taken over the captaincy for the tour match whilst Gayle is away.

Queensland have got off to a pretty good start, dismissing West Indies for 271. Ramnaresh Sarwan was the only player to pass 50 for the Windies. Dwayne Bravo was out for 49. Queensland's young bowling attack has done well with debutants Alister McDermott (Craig McDermott's son) and Luke Feldman both taking two wickets on debut.

Tour Match - Queensland vs West Indians at Allan Border Field

West Indians a.o. 271 (74 overs)

Ramnaresh Sarwan 73
Dwayne Bravo 49
Shivnarine Chanderpaul 41

Daniel Doran 3/107
Nathan Rimmington 2/25
Luke Feldman 2/36

Queensland 0/43 (10 overs)

Ryan Broad 25*
Nick Kruger 17*

Re: West Indies in Australia

Cricket Australia have announced the squad for the first test. No real surprises in the 12 that have been selected except for Doug Bollinger who comes into the side on the back of some very good ODI form.

Australia: Simon Katich, Shane Watson, *Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey, Michael Clarke, Marcus North, +Brad Haddin, Mitchell Johnson, Nathan Hauritz, Peter Siddle, Ben Hilfenhaus, Doug Bollinger

Re: West Indies in Australia

Queensland are well and truly on top against West Indies in the tour game. Nick Kruger made a fine hundred and ended making a big score as Queensland have plundered the Windies attack all over Allan Border Field. Wade Townsend has also played well and is close to making a hundred of his own as well.

Kemar Roach, Suliemann Benn and Narsingh Deonarine have the wickets so far for the West Indies.

Re: West Indies in Australia

It sucks that I don't know what to make of these tour match results. Are these Queensland youngsters that good, or are the Windies just that bad? The latter I suspect, but I guess the Test will give a bit of an indication.

The incompetent panel for the 3 tests

Australia v West Indies Test series

Match Referee Umpires
Australia v West Indies Chris Broad Asad Rauf and Ian Gould, 3rd Umpire Mark Benson
Australia v West Indies Chris Broad Ian Gould and Mark Benson, 3rd Umpire Asad Rauf

With that lot and referalls in for the series, the eastern states will be missing alot of play each night

Re: West Indies in Australia

Aww Simpson fell.

I was hoping for four centuries. Day three of the tour match and Queensland are 6/543 at nearly 1 pm off 141 overs.

Centuries to Kruger (172), Townsend (100), Reardon (125*), and Simpson coming close, blasting 73 off 112 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes, only just fell.

West Indies in trouble, can't see a draw either really. Queensland have doubled their score already with enough batting to come to add at least fifty more, more like a hundred or much more. If they declare at the end of today with another 150 runs put on in the afternoon session, then they have a session and a day to chase down 400ish and young hungry bowlers bowling at them on a day 5 Gabba pitch.

Not a good start for them, and Ceaser I like to think the Bulls are this good ;)

Re: West Indies in Australia

Reardon on the march now.

7 sixes in total for him, he's on 140 coming off an over of 15.

But as I type this unfortunately he tries to hit one four too many, Reardon out for a very well made 147 at a S/R of 77.

Well not much batting left now, but I'm sure if the're been the equivalent to five hundreds if averaged out amongst them, then the tail can score well.

Don't mind Benson, he's a pretty good umpire actually. Rauf's very ordinary, I think just about everyone knows that and I haven't seen much of Gould. With Australia having the better umpires going around, they're always going to get stiffed with regards to the umpiring duties.

With Pakistan coming over after the Windies, we'll only have to put up with Rauf for the Windies' series. Hopefully neither Koertzen or Bowden are sent over to replace him.

Re: West Indies in Australia

Of course Rudi and Billy will be over, probably with the other Billy as well

As for Australian umpires, turn it up, Harper is one of the worst in the world, maybe Taufel but I hate the **************, saved Andrew Symonds career many years ago when they were just about to give up on him

Re: West Indies in Australia

Believe Gavin Tounge could be one to watch out for (if they give him a game)
Watched him in the champions trophy, gets some nip off the seam and extracts some bounce as well. Our pitches may be suited to his sort of bowling (Especially GABBA, WACA pitches).

Just hoping for some good, competitive cricket to be played and the return of form for Mitchell Johnson.
