Subbies 2011/12

I would agree with your CV comment, whether we like it or not at some stage the CV tap will be turned off!
It's always an interesting discussion on this and I suspect opionions vary depending on where your club is on the success cycle. Is the theory that the points system will make the comp, more even, because I don't see that happening. When Melton won the flag 3 years ago, TEN of the eleven came through their junior development programs. Since then they have added Geisler, who was a junior at the club and Johnstone, who was playing in the local competiton, together with Nathan Allan and Shane Harwood. Mick Allan has been there 4 years, so they will get a deduction for him if the system came in next year.

If it is the dividend being cut, well boo hoo, clubs won't be able to rely on this to pay players, so this in itself will be a restriction on player movements. Every club (without exception) has the opportunity to improve whether by junior development or smart recruiting and I would hate to see us "lowering the bar" to accomodate the clubs who rely on dividends rather than generating funds within their club to cover operating costs. I defy anyone to tell me the standard of the comp hasn't improved substantially over the last 10 years, and that has been through the influx of Premier players and the fact that many stay on at their clubs for years.

If you look at the Premiership table over the last 10 years, there are plenty of clubs who have tasted success and, as I have stated before, I admire what Kew is attempting to this season, after a long premiership drought. The points restriction is just a recipe for mediocrity.

You might want to look up which club Warren played for before he moved from sydney and that might give you an indication as to how Cross appeared at caulfield. Cross only played about 6-7 1st grade games in sydney over two years and maybe he fancied playing with some good people at a well run club. If your other reference is in regard to Damiano you may also want to take into account who his best friend is and what he is doing cricket wise this year, he might just be sending down a few off spinners for the mighty fields. I might be pre empting the next response which will probably be about Pritchard but maybe he just actually likes the guys he has been playing with at Caulfield and wants to achieve some success with them. Why wouldnt he want to play at a good club with good facilities and a good social culture. Im sure our two pro's get paid (as do ther clubs) and we have never shy'd away from that but making accusations that are very much unfounded about other players is a bit out of order.

All in all people on here seem to want a fair level playing field in terms of the competition. This unfortunately can never be totally fair as some clubs have better grounds, better managment and more money to spend on everything from training ball to playing kit. It is an 90% amatuer sport with only 2 people being paid, the idea of levelling this would be to restrict how much the professionals would get paid and have a cap on it, pretty sure this isnt going to happen as you then have to look at costs for coaches etc and weather that is part of the "cap" if they also play and so on. I think a point system is also a bit flawed as it may end up with some clubs trying to hold onto young players instead of encouraging them to have a crack at premier cricket as they would be worth less points and make it easier to stay inside the points guidline. Surely this isnt what subbies is supposed to be. Its suppossed to be a breading ground of sorts for some younger players and a place where some good players, who dont necceassarily want the committment of premier cricket can enjoy playing all summer. Hey i might be wrong its just a thought.

sorry for the long rant
go the Fields!

Yeah, You're right, you would reckon 463 runs at 77 is probably worth a mention. And yet they can only pay 2 of them. Perhaps we should run an opinion poll as which 2 are "playing for the love of the club", even though they have never set foot in the joint before. I still maintain getting these "guns" is good for the competition. (except when you "run" into them)

Great response!!!! So have we settled on who is actually getting paid? Clearly it is not Cross, 'cause he played with Warren a few years ago and it is not Damiano 'cause he has a best friend and it is not Pritchard 'cause he travels from outside Melton, who have won 2 of the last 3 flags 'cause he wants to play at a "succesful club." Yep, you have convinced me.

Some people actually make friendships and enjoy playing at certain clubs. Not sure who your involved with but maybe that should be your concern in creating a good place where people do want to come and play. At the end of the day im not really bothered if your convinced anyway, was just giving a response to your speculation about our players getting paid outside the rules. On another note if you ever run into Pritchard just ask him where he'd like his two boys to play when they get old enough, pretty sure you'll find its Caulfield. As mentioned, maybe he just enjoys the club.

Caulfieldian, take your point about Cross and know that he is there because of Warren. The others I'm not sure about and won't comment on. I do know Caulfield chased our opening bowler of a couple of years ago who played for them last year. Maybe he played for the love of the club, maybe he didn't. Knowing the bloke, I'll go with 'Didn't'.

Certainly good clubs, good culture, etc have a bearing on where good players want to play. However, if you think every club plays 2 players max, then you are living in La La Land. Personally, I think they either need to put in the points system or go open slather.

I can categorically state that at the Saints, should any young players want to play Premier, they will go with our blessing, whether we think they are up to it or not. If clubs are hanging on to them in the hope that they'll get under the points, they are on a hiding to nothing!

It will be interesting to see what a Baldry does next year. Caulfield may be a great club (and I think this is the case) but if you're a 1's player palying 2's, that won't last too long!

Yeh and maybe you flogs pay him a stack load

If a points system comes into play, (and even if it doesn't), a good and steady transition of players from juniors to seniors will become crucial. How many players in the Caulfield 1s played their juniors at Caulfield? Any? And the same question to every other team. Although it doesn't always translate to 1st XI success, I think it is important particularly for depth across the 4 XIs.

Caulfield seem pretty strong across all elevens. Didn't their 2nd's win last year. Hasn't a couple of those players gone on to district this year and 1 played a game in the firsts at Richmond.

Prediction for North West group this round:
  • Broadmeadows vs Plenty Valley - after dropping the last 2 PV will be keen arrest the slide and keep in touch with the leading teams. Broady are pushing for the 6 but will not have the fire power.
  • Coburg vs Williamstown - both teams look to be struggling and both seem to rely heavily on the respective captains (sheedy and lewis). I think Coburg just, at home.
  • Kew vs Melton - set to be a cracker, Kews first real test. Teams are very evenly matched, good batting in the top 7, solid bowling outfits as well. If Harwood exposes the middle order early I think Kew could be in trouble, if they dig in they could be away. I think Melton has a slightly stronger side and I think they will get over the line not by much, if these two teams meet later on in the year anything could happen.
  • Werribee vs Preston - Chirnside Park is a stinker of a wicket, brings the 2 teams closer together, however Preston appear weak this year, Werribee have it all to play for pushing for the 6.
  • Sunshine vs Brunswick - Sunshine are a rabble, McKay and his boys will do the job, Grenville the only risk.
  • Altona vs Balwyn - Balwyn were poor last week, they'd be keen to bounce back. I don't think they have the cavalry to beat a strong club Altona at home.
  • Yarraville vs Ivanhoe - Ivanhoe batsmen should get the job done against the lack lustre Yarraville. Ivanhoe and suprised many climbing up the ladder, should continue it this week.

South East:

Malvern v Oakleigh: Roosters struggling and Oaks coming good. Oaks for mine;
Endeavour Hills v Elsternwick: Hills missing Evans boys, Wicks coming good. Elsternwick
Mt Waverley v Ormond: Ormond getting better but Mount for me;
Kingston Saints v Croydon: Good win by Saints after being 4/16, Croydon had a 'mare, but will welcome back Hassan. Saints;
Caulfield v Noble Park: Next! Caulfield;
Brighton v Bayswater: Brighton missing Seven, Bayswater as consistent as a Tourette's sufferer. Brighton;
Moorabbin v Box Hill: Binners missing some key players, Hills going great guns. Box Hill.

Young Willi Lad can you tell us what happened at Oak Park on the weekend? Or anybody heard?

Sorry mate have been asked to tow the party line here. We'll have to wait to hear from the subbies on this one. On another note its good to get back in to two day cricket this weekend. Our boys are very keen to get back on the winners list and it is always a big game when we come up against Coburg, especially when Scott is in the side.

Great tips here. If I wasn't playing I would be venturing out to Kew, what a game it will be. I agree Melton have the stronger side on paper but at the moment I'd have to say that Kew are just in better form. Although Geisler, Allen and Kirk won't stay down and will come good at some stage. Harwood's form last week was very promising for the Lions. All in all it will be a cracker but I'll go with the home side on form.

Where's 7? Has he walked back off the street?

Has been suspended by the club for his indiscretions last game; but would be surprised if you saw him again this season. Whilst you would obviously miss his runs, if hes a devisive influence and a loose unit, better to get rid of him now and put it onto the rest of the group to step up and cover him.

Dear 12345
dear 12345 I do like reading the game reviews here,most including yours are very informative and make for good reading but in your last post where you say Sunshine is a Rabble I find it very offensive to S.C.C ,ITS PLAYERS,MEMBERS AND COMMITTEE ,SCC Try very hard to field a competitive side each week and with a stroke of luck we could have 5 wins for the season losing 3 very close games I don`t call that Rabble also Sunshine are not a club flushed with cash to buy players being located in the West as we are there is not lot of juniors wanting to play the game soccer and football being the dominate codes and choice of our ethnic environment to work hard every week in and out of season to maintain this proud club steeped in tradition and then be called rabble is very insulting to all concerned with our great club may I suggest a retraction and apology from you would be the Aussie way to go.
thank you for taking the time to read my rant and wait in anticipation for your retraction
kind regards
David Reid
ps any players of any age or ability looking for a new home for next season please make contact

Well said. Most clubs rely on the hard work of volunteers and not many clubs can afford to buy finals positions . No club should be called a rabble. Fortunes fluctuate.
