21/22 Shield Thread

Not so Blues and Vics also only playing 7. How do QLD get nine tho? Tell me why there is only the one match this round when as you wrote teams have only been given 7 games and why WA is not playing a match until Marsh15 when their women played a game this week. Uneven games due to poor scheduling by CA as I see it.

The reason for the uneven games would due to the COVID-19 pandemic which made logistics of the tournament too hard to sort out in the second half of the season given teams had played an uneven amount of games heading into the BBL break also due to COVID-19 difficulties. WA's hard border ceased today which would have also made scheduling matches difficult as well given the uncertainty over whether the border will be in place or not. Part of WA's side also went home after the BBL while others stayed in Melbourne which also made playing games hard, I imagine the players would have wanted a bit of a break given they spent seven weeks on the road.

I do feel CA could have tried harder to try at least get all teams to play an even amount of games, eight games each would have been fair and would have been doable in my opinion.

Yes any likelihood of play in the Bulls/Redbacks game is minimal with this dreaded La Nina in its devastating final throes this week on the Eastern Seaboard . Sydney has been copping it too. My pool looks like a swamp gggrrr.

Quite a bit of play was played today, some 72 overs between Queensland and SA. Queensland are 4/158 at stumps. Matt Renshaw continued his run of form with 63 while Liam Scott claimed 2/37 and former Queensland player Brendan Doggett picked up 2/45. There's extended play on the last two days but hard to see a result here unless there are some very generous declarations from both sides here.

The eastern coast weather is absolute garbage. La Nina still has a little way to go, the signal is not expected to fall to neutral until mid-April, possibly later at this stage.

May be some play today if Gabba's drainage is at its best. After a soaking morning it should fine about midday. This is shield cricket so why not add a reserve day CA. Who am I kidding.

A reserve day isn't doable, not enough time on the cricket calendar. Getting a season with a full 10 matches next season would be the goal I would think.

Tell me about it. BOM saying this rain bomb and resulting flooding smashing the entire east at the moment is unprecedented and the result of consecutive La Ninas. Rain, rain go away.

Renshaw looked good anchoring the Bulls on a lively deck while this kid Jack Clayton looks a good'n too.

Heh I posted that early before I looked at the radar which showed rain clearing by around midday.

Good call. The rain cleared up during the earlier part of the day's play so they managed to get a decent amount of overs in.

Tell me about it. BOM saying this rain bomb and resulting flooding smashing the entire east at the moment is unprecedented and the result of consecutive La Ninas. Rain, rain go away.

Still more to come I think, autumn should be fairly wet I would say, at least the first six weeks or so for the eastern coast. Total contrast over there, had just 5mm in three months from December 2021 to February 2022.

Predictably, the match between Queensland and South Australia ended in a draw, Queensland claimed 2.92 points from the match while SA scored 2.15. Jake Lehmann scored a century for SA, making 102 before SA declared their first innings at 9d/244. Queensland made 191 in their second innings chasing quick runs with the Redbacks finishing at 3/115 chasing 253 to win when stumps were called.

There was no change to the ladder, Queensland remain fifth on average points with SA remaining in last place.

The next round begins on 15 March with two matches, Victoria host Tasmania at the Junction Oval while New South Wales take on Western Australia At Bankstown Oval in Sydney.

Another draw. Still both skippers tried to make a game of it despite losing the first day.

Only the one Marsh Cup match.. the final so will post here.
The Warriors superior pace attack has taken them to the '22 Marsh Cup title after a battling effort by the Blues saw them fall 18 runs short. Paceman Jhye Richardson was the top scorer for the match. No kidding. He was also the most economic bowler but went off the field late in the day from an apparent leg injury. No not again Jhye..

An absolutely cracking one-day final. A rather low-scoring affair taking into account the modern day game but it was a great match overall, plenty of twists and turns in momentum with both sides enjoying periods of dominance at times with both bat and ball.

In the end, the last wicket undefeated stand of 52 between Matthew Kelly and Jason Behrendorff proved pivotal, propelling WA to 9/225 from their 50 overs after what was a poor start with the bat, slumping to 6/89 which included a 64 run partnership between Shaun Marsh and Cameron Bancroft. The tail wagged vigorously in the later overs thanks to Hjye Richardson, Aaron Hardie plus Kelly and Behrendorff to give WA something to defend albeit a fairly modest total.

NSW started well but the wicket of Matthew Gilkes saw the Blues lose their first wicket on 42 before WA got on top to reduce NSW to 6/108. Daniel Sams joined Moises Henriques with Sams hitting a quickfire 42 off 41 balls before departing which brought Ben Dwarshius to the crease to join Henriques. The equation reduced to 22 runs from 36 balls but a brilliant catch by Hilton Cartwright of the bowling of D'arcy Short saw Henriques dismissed before WA cleaned up the last two wickets for three runs as the Blues were bowled out for 207 with WA claiming victory by 18 runs and the Marsh Cup title for 2021/22.

Andrew Tye was Player of the Match for his 4/30 while Queensland's Matt Renshaw was named Player of the Series (377 runs, one wicket).

WA's One-Day Cup win was the state's 15th one-day title, extending its own record for most titles. Of the 53 finals played, WA has played in 26 of them, winning 15 and being runners up on 11 occasions.

Congrats to your boys. Well deserved. We had you dead and buried at 6/89 but failed to apply the coup de gras. The two pivotal losses for us were when Kerr and Holt were bowled by a pair of peaches in the middle of the innings. We will have to avenge that defeat on March 15.

That is an absolute screamer from Carty. Surprised his state white ball record is not better.. stops him playing internationally.

Let us hope Jhye's injury is not long term as he has been slated to tour Sri Lanka I am hearing.

We're a really good white ball cricket state, 15 one-day titles and four T20 titles (as the Scorchers) is testament to that. We were certainly in a lot of trouble early in the game as NSW bowled fairly well but some errant shots didn't help either. The lower order saved the team big time, both with the bat and also with the ball and was a pretty remarkable effort by them.

It was a blinder of a catch. Cartwright is one of Australia's best fielders, at least in domestic cricket. He generally has a safe pair of hands (catching), a strong throwing arm plus he covers the ground very quickly too. He is certainly more of a red ball cricketer at domestic level, very much in the pure all-rounder stakes.

His T20 batting record has improved in recent times, particularly since moving to the Melbourne Stars.

Richardson has strained a hamstring unfortunately. A standard hamstring strain is generally a 21 day injury which means he'd be touch and go for the Shield final should WA qualify.

Perhaps Carty is a chance for a future T20 Int. gig.

As long as Jhye is fit for the Sri Lankan tour. About time WA returned to the Shield. On the cards your blokes will make the final. Better chance than the Blues.

The next round of Shield matches start on Tuesday with Victoria hosting Tasmania at Junction Oval while New South Wales face Western Australia at Bankstown Oval in Sydney.

WA have made several changes to their squad for Tuesday's game. 17 year old Teague Wyllie comes into the squad for this match, fresh off a strong ICC U19 World Cup tournament earlier this year for Australia along with some excellent Second XI form for WA with Perth's Sam Fanning also gaining a place in the squad after being the leading run scorer in WA's Premier Cricket competition with 867 runs. Both Wyllie and Fanning registered half centuries in a WACA intra-squad match recently as well. Sam Whiteman is back in the side after missing the last two games with concussion and is expected to replace Jayden Goodwin at the top of the order.

Out of the squad goes Shaun Marsh with a knee injury while Jhye Richardson has a hamstring strain with both injuries sustained in the Marsh Cup One-Day Final held on Friday.

Finally Shield resumes for the Blues. Must win for us. Big blow your blokes losing Richardson and Marsh.

How in any world is Gilkes rated a better red ball bat than either Hackney or Hearne. The bloke averages a pidding career @28FC..@22 this season. I also want Kerr in for Edwards..@18 bat @ 8 wks this season.

I also want Nevill and Henriques to announce their retirements.

Going to call your blokes Warriors Lj.
Warriors win toss and bat on a (rare this summer) ripper sunny day in western Sydney.

Blues pick only two frontline quicks with support from a bunch of bits'n pieces players in.. Kerr, Henriques and Edwards. Tho I do rate Kerr. We have also picked two tweakers.. with the delisted Nair back to join T Sangha. Look short a specialist bat to me with skipper and usual #3 Patterson opening and Kerr promoted to the top 6.

Veteran Shaun Marsh returns but Warriors have lost their spearhead Jhye Richardson. Good to see the injury-prone Joel Paris back tho. Promising all rounder Aaron Hardie is in as a specialist bat. Fine with that as this bloke scored a Premier double hundred a few weeks back. Picked up two wickets too in his first coupla overs in last state game from memory.

I personally feel Henriques still has a bit to offer at Shield level, would be good for the younger guys in the team to have someone of his experience around.

Warriors is fine, I still call them that sometimes. Not really sure why they dropped it in the first place.

Marsh was cleared on Monday to play and is captaining the side. A fairly useful knock today from him I see, good to have him back.

Both Shield games between Tasmania vs Victoria and New South Wales vs Western Australia began today.

Tasmania won the toss and batted first, reaching 5/250 at stumps on day one. Ben McDermott scored a well made 94 for the Tigers while Matthew Wade notched 61 as captain. Young spinner Todd Murphy led the way for Victoria with 3/58 from 23 overs.

In the other game today, WA won the toss and also decided to bat against NSW. Cameron Bancroft made a fine century for WA, scoring 117 while Shaun Marsh made compiled 58. Hilton Cartwright is 29 not out overnight after scoring two runs from his first 60 balls. Jack Edwards claimed 2/46 to be the Blues' best bowler on the first day.

Showers are expected at both venues over the next three days so the weather could play a part although the maximum rain expected on any day is 3mm which is not too significant.
