Australia in South Africa

Re: Australia in South Africa

Ouch, not good to hear. Might be good to play Geeves and Magoffin, and get rid of McDonald.

Re: Australia in South Africa

We could go into the 2nd test with one of the rawest bowling attacks in my living memory.

And still have the talent and determination to win...

Re: Australia in South Africa

AUSTRALIAN captain Ricky Ponting expects fast bowlers Peter Siddle and Ben Hilfenhaus to be passed fit for the second Test against South Africa starting on Friday.

Siddle and Hilfenhaus, due to bowl at match intensity during training late yesterday at Sahara Stadium, will learn their fate when Australia's medical staff assess how the pair have pulled up from their only vigorous net session of the week. "I don't think they're really in doubt," Ponting said.

According to the locals, Sahara Stadium offers huge swing when the tide is right. The ground is a short distance from the beach and at high tide, the water level rises and the pitch becomes full of juice.

Scientists have rubbished the theory, but former players swear by it - hence Ponting's desperation for Hilfenhaus to make the XI.

For the record - and for those who enjoy a bit of folklore more than scientific data - high tide during the five days is at 12.28pm, 1.45pm, 2.30pm, 3.07pm and 3.45pm. Hilfenhaus might well be timing his spells to coincide.

Re: Australia in South Africa

what a start by the aussies, batting first they have flown to 0/64 in the 13th over. Morkel has lost the plot, either over pitching or no balling. hughes driving has been excellent and kat was lucky not be out as ntini just had him edging thtough 5th slip

Re: Australia in South Africa

Will someone please get McDonald out of the team
he is an average bowler and a very average batsman
if he is one of the best all rounders in the country then we are pathetic

Maccas ability to keep it tight is required with this team, all 3 bowlers have been smashed around a bit (Siddle in the 1st, Johnson in the 2nd at times, Hilfy in ODIs) so none of them are good at containing a side but Macca can and did which put the pressure on

All 3 quick bowlers are wicket takers as well, all capable of bags of wickets, he fitted the attack perfectly and Dougie may not have lasted long as it was and Australia could have been relying alot more on North

Plus he can bowl long spells which took away the reliability on the 5th bowler but they should go with McGain for the next test

That has actually changed my view on Mcdonald.
Very good points there.
But his batting still needs alot of work though, i'd even have Johnson currently a better batsmen than him.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Hughes you star!!

Why did it take so long to get him in?

Btw, not that anyone cares, Katich got his 50.

0/169
Hughes 105*
Katich 55*

Re: Australia in South Africa

Hughes launches Harris for two consecutive sixes to bring up his maiden test hundred from 132 balls. What an innings from the youngster, he is going to be something special.

Australia are 0/165 after 38 overs, South Africa just have nothing in reply at the moment. Katich is on 51 and is building an innings after a poor showing in the first test.

Re: Australia in South Africa

has anyone noticed the difference between the Aussie cameraman and the South African equivalent ?? The South African's are great, just filming chicks on the hill all day !! Great stuff !!

Re: Australia in South Africa

Katich gets his hundred. 2/251, Katich 104, Hussey 11. Still 28 overs left in the day too.

Re: Australia in South Africa

Steyn gets Katich for 108. Good length outside off and Katich loses his focus and edges a simple catch to Graeme Smith at first slip who takes it this time.

3/259, Hussey on 14 with Clarke the new batsman.
